Editorial Submissions & Writers' Guidelines
Minority Nurse aims to provide nurses of color with a targeted career road map by offering practical articles on job opportunities, employment trends and continuing education. Readers represent a wide range of educational backgrounds, from associate's degree-holders to PhDs and from students to practicing nurses and nursing faculty. Minority health disparities and culturally competent health care are frequent concerns, as are specific efforts to increase the number of African-American, Asian, Hispanic, Filipino and Native American/Alaska Native nurses in the profession.
Frequency: Four times each year
When preparing and submitting an article for publication, please keep the following guidelines in mind:
a. Our editorial is written in an informal but informative manner. We prefer not to use footnotes or endnotes, as this gives the appearance of a scientific journal. Also, please note that Minority Nurse is not a peer-reviewed publication.
b. Generally, we follow Associated Press (AP) style in all matters related to punctuation and grammar.
c. The location (city and state) of any companies, organizations or schools cited in the text should be included.
d. The professional and educational credentials of any nurses cited in the text should be included (on first usage only)-e.g., Jane Hernandez, RN, BSN, MPH.
e. Our preferred length for articles is 1,800 to 2,000 words for features and 800 to 1,000 words for columns, such as Academic Forum, Second Opinion and book reviews.
f. When submitting an article, we encourage electronic formats, preferably email submissions. The program we use is Microsoft Word for Windows, though we can also accept documents prepared in some other word processing programs, such as WordPerfect. If sending via email, please submit to Pam Chwedyk with the article as an attachment.
Manuscripts can also be submitted by mail. Please include a PC disk with the text of the article, along with a printed hard copy. We cannot read Macintosh disks.

g. Whenever possible, we like to use photos, preferably four-color, to illustrate feature articles. Please ask any minority nurses you interview to send photos of themselves directly to Pam Chwedyk at the mailing address above, with a note indicating whether or not the photos must be returned. We are especially partial to "action shots," such as nurses working with patients, minority students participating in recruitment or retention activities, pictures taken at community health events, etc.
Electronic or scanned photos can be sent as email attachments to Pam Chwedyk. We can also accept electronic images on ZIP disks, 3.5" floppy disks, CDR, or as FTP or Web site links. Electronic or scanned photos must be at least 3" x 5" in size with a resolution of at least 300 dpi. For photos taken with digital cameras, use the "fine" or "high res" setting. A JPG file format is preferred; however, we can accept TIF, EPS or BMP formats.
h. All authors should include a one- to two-sentence bio for inclusion with articles they have written.
