Manuscripts Wanted for Book on Educating Culturally Diverse Nursing Students
Are you a nursing educator who has developed an innovative solution for meeting the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse students? If so, the editors of a forthcoming scholarly book on this important topic would like to hear from you.
Two professors at the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minn., have received a grant to develop an interdisciplinary anthology of essays entitled Educating for the 21st Century: Educating Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Nursing Students. They are seeking manuscripts (10 to 15 pages) from nursing faculty as well as from faculty who teach prerequisite courses for nursing programs and from other academic and co-curricular professionals. The editors are especially interested in manuscripts pertaining to:
• Pedagogical strategies that address a variety of learning styles.
• Content and materials that reflect cultural diversity and help develop cultural competence in all nursing students.
• Strategies for facilitating success in the clinical setting for culturally and linguistically diverse students.
• Assessment practices that are sensitive to cultural and linguistic bias and that allow students to demonstrate nursing knowledge in a variety of ways.
• Academic and co-curricular support services, such as supplemental instruction, testing accommodations and advising and mentoring initiatives, that address the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse students.
• Initiatives that develop leadership skills in culturally diverse students around issues of racism and access to health care.
The deadline for completed manuscripts is October 31, 2005. Authors will receive notification of acceptance by December 31. Manuscripts should be sent to: Susan Bosher, PhD, Associate Professor and Director of ESL, Box #4232, College of St. Catherine, 2004 Randolph Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55105. For more information, contact Susan Bosher at sdbosher@stkate.edu or Margaret Dexheimer Pharris, PhD, RN, MPH, FAAN, at mdpharris@stkate.edu.
