The A (for Achievement) List
Norma Martinez Rogers, PhD, RN, FAAN, president of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN), was honored as one of the nation’s Top Latino Leaders in the February/March 2009 issue of Latino Leaders magazine. Talk about an inspiring role model: the magazine notes that Martinez Rogers grew up in a public housing project in San Antonio and worked as a teacher and caseworker before embarking on her 33-year-long nursing career. Currently an associate professor and clinical instructor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) School of Nursing, Martinez Rogers was named to the Top Leaders list for her advocacy and health policymaking efforts on behalf of minority and underserved populations.
One of nursing’s foremost experts on community and public health, Phyllis Sharps, PhD, RN, FAAN, has been appointed to a national Institute of Medicine study committee that will examine qualifications for professionals who provide mental health counseling services under TRICARE, the Department of Defense’s health care services plan for active-duty military personnel, veterans and their families. The committee will develop recommendations for permitting licensed mental health counselors to practice independently under the TRICARE program. Sharps, chair of the Department of Community Public Health at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, says the study’s goal is to “improve TRICARE by helping it supply the best mental health care to meet the complex needs of active military members and veterans.”
Latino Leaders isn’t the only major Hispanic publication to shine its media spotlight on the achievements of Hispanic nurses. La Opinión, the nation’s leading Spanish-language daily newspaper, has selected transcultural nursing experts (and sisters) Carol Bloch, MEd, MSN, RN, CTN, CNS, and Carolyn Bloch, MEd, MSN, RN, CTN, CNS, as recipients of its 2009 Mujeres Destacadas (Outstanding Women) awards, which recognize the contributions of Latinas in the Los Angeles area who have distinguished themselves through exceptional service. The Blochs, who were chosen as award winners in the health care category, are nurse educators specializing in the teaching and promotion of culturally competent nursing care. Their recent accomplishments include developing a culturally and linguistically competent workforce diversity program for the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services.
Divina Grossman, PhD, RN, ARNP, FAAN, dean of the Florida International University (FIU) College of Nursing and Health Sciences, has held many prestigious national and state appointments during her distinguished career, including (to name just a few): chair of the American Academy of Nursing’s Task Force on Health Disparities, president of the Florida League of Nursing, chair of the American Nurses Association Council on Medical-Surgical Nursing Practice and chair of the Florida Nurses Association Task Force on Cultural Diversity. And now here’s one more to add to the list: Grossman has been elected chair of the Florida Association of Colleges of Nursing (FACN) for a twoyear term. FACN is comprised of deans and directors of some 50 public and private baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs throughout the state.
