Response to Question From a Hopeful/Lena Gould, CRNA, MSN

Hello BSN Nursing Student 2010

Congratulations for making a conscience decision to improve your overall grade particularly in the science courses outlined. I agree with the soon to be Nurse Anesthesia Student who gave you a great deal of advice on how to make this happen. Please rely heavily on what she mentioned. While you contemplate on what course of action to take in this matter, please in the interim start studying for your NCLEX-RN Exam.

Now, is the perfect time for you to prepare for the exam that will designate you as a Registered Nurse. You can purchase any NCLEX-RN Study Guide in a book store as it will have outlined the fundamentals of nursing, medical-surgical, obstetrics, psych and pediatric nursing sections. You will find similar type question that are on the exam as well as those that you will find in your classroom. Most definitely review the fundamentals of nursing, assessment and medical-surgical nursing over the course of the summer. When you return this fall, you will most likely start your specialty rotations. For example, when you start your pediatric rotation, read your pediatric questions with rationale in your NCLEX-RN Study guide. The same as for your obstetric, psych and advanced medical surgical nursing rotations. You should highlight and refer back to each section as much as possible. As well as review the conversions in math and math related probelms too. Remember, for pediatrcis, especially, all of these patients weights are converted into kilograms...so know how to convert in kilograms and then start your math problems.

Also, secure an ICU position, preferably in a Level I Trauma Center. Whether it is in Trauma, Cardiac, Medical, Surgical or Neuro ICU. You will need the improved grades and the Critical Care experience as the minimum requirement for admission into a Nurse Anesthesia Program. Then take the exam for CCRN after one year of Critical Care experience. Please visit my website, www.diversitycrna.org and you will find many CRNAs and Nurse Anesthesia Students of color from many states.

Please consider coming to the Diversity in Nurse Anesthesia Mentorship Program Information Session Luncheon in Miami on October 10th (Saturday). You will meet many minority CRNAs, Nurse Anesethesia Students, ICU Nurses and Nursing Students in attendance. Also, you will meet two Nurse Anesthesia Program Directors and Associate Directors from University of Miami and Barry University who will discuss their individual programs. You will find out about the admission and selection process, rigors of the program, financial considerations, clinical and didactic courses, Board preparation and more! The actual registration form will be posted on the Diversity website in two weeks.

But first, go out and purchase a NCLEX-RN Study Guide...
