Response to New To ICU/Lena Gould, CRNA, MSN
Hello
Congratulations in securing an ICU position! Please consider sitting for the CCRN Exam within the next couple of months. So, explore buying any CCRN Review Book at this time in preparation for the rigorous test. Also, accept any Committee Meetings on the job for Quality Assurance or patient related issues. These two will make your ultimate application for the Nurse Anesthesia Program very competitive. How were your undergraduate grades in nursing school? If not stellar, there are ways to remedy this situation. Consider very seriously taking graduate Nursing courses (Nursing Research I and II, Advanced Pharmacology and or Pathophysiology). Ensure success in these courses by obtaining "A"s. Again, it will make you into a competitive applicant. Visit the AANA website, www.aana.com often as possible, so you can be familiar with the profession as well. One last and critical point, secure a shadowing experience with a CRNA at your facility. The CRNAs will come from the operating room often times to give you report and this will be perfect for you to introduce yourself and tell them of your strong interest in the profession and your desire to shadow them for at most eight hours. You have to be proactive in this respect.
I am the founder of the Diversity in Nurse Anesthesia Mentorship Program and would like for you to visit our website, www.diversitycnra.org. I will announce in December, the two upcoming Diversity Information Session Luncheons scheduled for 2010 in Maryland and North Carolina. You will meet Program Directors from various Nurse Anesthesia Programs, minority Nurse Anesthesia Students and CRNAs from across the country. Discussed will be the admission and selection process, rigors of the program, balancing family and finances, clinical expectation, didactic courses and Board preparation.
If you prefer, email me at crna4u@comcast.net.
So, start studying for the CCRN...
