Performance Responsibilities
Under direction of the Associate Dean, to provide services to the Student Health Service Program and college community, including Children's Center, and other programs, specifically for disease protection and prevention, and health promotion; to facilitate medical and mental health services for prompt treatment to limit or prevent disability; and to perform other related duties.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
a. Provide Registered Nursing services to the Student Health Service Program.
b. Assist college physicians and mental health team in providing health care to the college student population.
c. Assess mental and physical health needs and offer appropriate services and/or referrals.
d. Assist in or provide crisis intervention, health education and counseling.
e. Assess the students stress level as it relates to academics, work, and personal commitments and assist in realistic priority determination.
f. Refer student to appropriate campus and community resources for socio-economic, financial, academic, and health services needs.
g. Provide follow-up on students? medical and mental health treatment and services as needed.
h. Make appropriate referrals to private practitioners and community agencies for long-term chronic health needs.
i. Consult with and advise faculty and other staff in assisting students with health care needs.
j. Make initial evaluation of exposure to hazardous waste and other materials for students and staff as appropriate.
k. Follow public health protocols for communicable disease control (tuberculosis screening).
l. Assess and refer case injuries for workers compensation.
m. Provide emergency first aid assessment to students, college staff, and visitors.
n. Respond as a member of the Disaster and Crisis Alert Team to provide medical and mental health evaluations, and triage; to initiate crisis telephone tree and to work with community agencies.
o. Conduct programs for blood pressure screening, influenza clinics, mammograms, PSA testing, cholesterol screening, and health maintenance services.
p. Conduct orientation for new Registered Nurses and student health staff.
q. Alert the Director or the Administration when appropriate, of possible areas of concern requiring intervention
r. Assist in formulating policies, procedures, and protocol for the student health service.
s. Participate in college committees relevant to health and safety.
t. Evaluate clinic standards of care related to Student Health Services Policies and Procedures from licensed and unlicensed health care providers, according to the California Nurse Practice Act.
u. Perform other related job duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Faculty/Educational Administrators complete the Equivalency Application only if you do not meet the minimum qualifications for the position you are applying to, and you wish to be considered.
Knowledge of:
1. The application, principles, and procedures for Registered Nurses under the California Nurse Practice Act.
2. Causes and means of transmission and methods of control of communicable diseases.
3. Social and psychological principles underlying nursing practice, especially related to language and cultures.
4. Community resources available for medical and mental health referral services.
Ability to:
5. Perform crisis intervention.
6. Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate health care programs and standards.
7. Administer prescribed medical treatments, laboratory tests, and medication within college and/or District policies and procedures as appropriate.
8. Set priorities without direct supervision, and perform autonomously in an ambulatory nurse-directed health care clinic as appropriate.
9. Train and direct the work of others.
10. Establish and maintain effective relationship with those contacted in the course of work.
Education and Experience:
11. Possess a current Registered Nursing License issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
12. Have at least two years recent experience in professional nursing, preferably in an acute care or ambulatory care setting.
13. Possess a current CPR Certification.
14. Or, any combination of education and experience equivalent to the required education and experience.

15. Must be able to meet and perform the physical requirement for this position.
Desired Qualifications
1. Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
2. College Health Nurse Certification.
3. Bilingual ability in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese.
Conditions of Employment
This is a regular, full time, 12 month per year position. The normal hours of work are to be arranged between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor.

Based on the 2008-2009 Salary Schedule
Pay Philosophy
Starting salaries for support staff positions begin at Step-1 of the salary range. Employees hired prior to April 1 of each year will move to the next step on the upcoming July 1. Employees hired on or after April 1 of each year will move to the next step the following July 1. All movement on the salary schedule will occur July 1 of each year for all classified employees.

Benefits:
The District provides a comprehensive benefit program effective the first calendar day of the month following the first day of regular employment. Dental and vision care plans for employees and dependents, and life insurance and income protection plans for employees are fully paid by the District. A variety of medical plans covering employees and their dependents are available, with the District paying the major portion of the cost. Other liberal benefits include, on an annual basis: vacation, 12 days the first year; sick leave, 12 days; holidays, averaging 12 days. Employees participate in both the Public Employees Retirement System and Social Security.
