Job summary
The Academic Faculty Mentor is a subject matter expert who is responsible for facilitating student learning, and providing high quality student service and support as the student moves through his/her competency-based degree programs in nursing. S/he has responsibility for all aspects of student involvement in learning resources and learning communities in preparation for competency assessments across the entire range of topics covered in the student’s university program. The Mentor has expertise in a nursing discipline as well as in educational theory and pedagogy. The Academic Faculty Mentor tracks progress and facilitates student interaction with learning resources, assessment preparation, professional disposition, and time management. Academic Faculty Mentors are expert at synchronous and asynchronous communication with distributed adults experiencing a variety of scheduling challenges. The job requires discipline, time management and a high degree of organizational skill. Academic Faculty Mentor employs critical thinking and creative problem solving in working with their students across the breadth and depth of many disciplines, some of which will require access to additional content expertise. The Academic Faculty Mentor engages in scholarship within the discipline of nursing, but engages students in professional scholarship and growth as a professional nurse.

Summary of essential job functions (most important listed first)
• Supports student as s/he moves through their entire college program – from EWB to graduation.
• Provides content support in the form of alternative learning resources, learning strategies, community facilitation, program scaffolding, and student service access.
• Carries a load of up to 60 students across one or more programs within the Nursing Department. (This load may increase or decrease to accommodate student movement, provide release time for other activities, scholarship, curriculum development, etc)
• Attends regular training and update sessions to remain current in policies and procedures of the university and nursing department.
• Works individually in a distributed environment, but functions as part of a team in meeting and exceeding program, College, and University goals.
• Implements University and program policies and procedures in a manner, which provides students with the understandings and support necessary to succeed in their program goals.
• Promotes and assists the operation of the University through committee work, outreach, and other assignments.
• Engages in professional growth and scholarship activities that appropriate to individual interests. Participates in development of curriculum, research on student learning, and teaching, presentations at conferences, and publications.
• Participates in scholarship activities to improve professionalism, clinical skills, reputation of the University, and serve as a model for graduate students.
• Other duties, as assigned.

Minimum requirements
• Master’s degree in related field, doctoral degree preferred.
• Expertise in one or more fields covered by the competencies required in nursing programs.
• Travel in support of program and University requirements.
• Higher education teaching and/or curricular experience
• Ability to spend significant time working at a computer
• Ability to spend significant time on the telephone
• Strong Microsoft Office skills and Internet capabilities
• Excellent verbally and written communicate skills
• Collaboration skills and ability to work as a member of a team.

Preferred characteristics
• Certification in relevant field and/or significant experience in the professional field.
• Experience with integrated technology systems and tools.

• Student success (as measured by number of program graduates)
• Student retention (as measured by % of students retained 7 months, 13 months, 19 months, 25 months and 3 years)
• Student satisfaction (as measured by approved survey responses administered to program participants)

• Other measures, as agreed upon
