MEDICAL-SURGICAL NURSING, FACULTY MEMBER TENURE-TRACK, FALL ‘10

Function of Position:
MCC is one of only twenty community colleges out of more than a thousand across North America selected for board membership in the League for Innovation in the Community College. We are a large institution that offers over 80 programs across two main campuses, two specialized centers and various extension sites. The Nursing Department offers courses that result in students' earning an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Nursing. The department is a leader in nursing education in the Rochester community. Historically, over 90% of graduates pass the licensing exam on the first attempt. Employers consistently report high levels of satisfaction with the performance of MCC nurses. Many of our graduates pursue continuing education at local colleges and universities and earn BS and MS degrees. Several have returned to join our faculty! The successful candidate will bring to our school a particular expertise in Medical/Surgical Nursing. We seek a candidate with current clinical knowledge and skills and a passion for participating in the education of the next generation of registered nurses.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:
Some examples of responsibilities, although not all-inclusive, include:
• Teaches courses and evaluates student performance as per guidelines set by the Department of Nursing and Monroe Community College. Teaching occurs in college laboratory, lecture settings and clinical facilities.
• Prepares lesson plans, creates appropriate teaching aids, arranges instructional materials and activities for student usage during classes.
• Selects clinical assignments for students.
• Maintains a collegial relationship with clinical facility and meets all requirements of clinical facility.
• Maintains student attendance records, grades, and other records required by the college.
• Maintains advisement and office hours in accordance with contractual guidelines.
• Advises students concerning academic, professional and related issues.
• Assists department with student recruitment, placement and registration.
• Assists department with curriculum review, assessment, revision, and development.
• Develops new course materials and innovative teaching techniques to facilitate learning.
• Participates in course planning with assigned teaching team.
• Attends departmental meetings as a contributing member.
• Contributes to the department through membership on departmental committees.
• Contributes to the college through membership on division and college committees.
• Stays current in nursing and actively participates in professional development.
• Assists with the development of grant proposals and with follow-up activities.
• Participates in community activities.

Required Qualifications:
• A Master's degree with a major in Nursing from an accredited institution.
• Current New York State licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse.
• Two years recent clinical experience in Medical-Surgical Nursing.
• Ability to teach courses in Medical-Surgical Nursing.
• Evidence of effective communication (interpersonal, speaking, and writing) skills.
• Evidence of commitment to Associate Degree Nursing education.
• Evidence of proficiency with technology.
• Commitment to supporting an inclusive environment on campus. Evidence of respect for and understanding of people with diverse backgrounds, abilities, and needs.
• Evidence of commitment to the philosophy of a comprehensive community college.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Recent teaching experience.
• Evidence of team-centered, participatory nature.
• Willingness to serve students, the department and the college through activities.
• Knowledge of, or experience in, implementing a variety of teaching strategies.
• Commitment to continued professional growth.
