Full-time, 10 Month, Classified Position
Salary Range 46: $4,856 - $6,182/Month (Starting Salary: $4,856 - $5,343)
Current Work Schedule: Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (Can Vary)

POSITION
Responsible for maintaining and operating the Health Sciences Skills Lab and Resource Center. Position is located at Ohlone College Newark Center for Health Science and Technology. Under the direction of faculty, demonstrate, evaluate and assist students with skills practice in the skills lab and at clinical sites as students perform professional nursing duties. May require some night, weekend, and off-campus location assignments.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Exercises functional and technical supervision over student assistants and other duties assigned to the lab.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
•Prepare for laboratory demonstrations; set up laboratory apparatus; dispense proper quantities of materials.
•Demonstrate to students, individually and in groups, nursing, and respiratory therapy procedures; discuss related principles.
•Provide assistance to students on a variety of skills laboratory and course related matters; review student work in progress and assist in resolving problems; serve as resource person in skill lab and at clinical practice sites.
•Monitor students involved in skills laboratory activities; ensure student compliance with laboratory policies, procedures and safety precautions.
•Tutor and assist nursing, phlebotomy, physical therapy assistant and respiratory therapy students as directed by faculty members.
•Assist faculty in the evaluation of student skill competency in the skills lab and at clinical practice sites; communicate student performance to appropriate faculty; maintain student records.
•Assume responsibility for the overall management, general operation and maintenance of the skills lab and resource center; schedule students; prepare schedule of open lab hours; coordinate with faculty requests for additional lab hours.
•Responsible for ordering, maintaining, and providing security for supplies, materials and equipment; inventory materials and equipment; store, discard and rotate materials according to standard procedures; receive, assemble and test new equipment.
•Maintain, clean and test equipment; arrange for repairs and replacement as necessary.
•Check out and collect borrowed equipment; inspect equipment and materials for proper condition upon return.
•Participate in the planning and implementation of laboratory exercises; implement new or modified policies and procedures as required.
•Attend faculty and advisory committee meetings to coordinate appropriate skills content within program; evaluate and recommend new material for use in skills lab and resource center as needed.
•Participate in budget preparation and administration (to include purchasing and accounts payable), prepare cost estimates for budget recommendations; submit justifications for budget items; monitor and control expenditures.
•Schedule and review activities of student assistants to ensure that work is completed in a timely and appropriate manner; provide or coordinate staff training, work with employees to correct deficiencies.
•Respond to inquiries and requests for information.
•Prepare, administer, and grade math exams for students in the Nursing Program
•Assist students in the use of computers and work with IS in equipment maintenance.
•Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of: Subject matter related to assigned laboratories including nursing, respiratory therapy, physical therapy assistant, and phlebotomy skills and theory; operational characteristics of laboratory apparatus, equipment and materials pertaining to assigned laboratories; medical terminology; principles and practices of current acute medical-surgical nursing and related health services including nursing principles as they relate to skills and procedures used in acute care settings; principles and practices of laboratory operations; laboratory techniques related to assigned laboratories; advanced nursing mathematical principles and scientific concepts; tutorial techniques and principles; principles and practices of record keeping; modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment; principles of supervision and training; English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation; safe work practices and methods.

Skill to: Demonstrate correct laboratory methods, practices and techniques; operate audio visual and computer equipment.

Ability to: Prepare laboratory exercises and materials for student and staff use; provide assistance and instruction to students on academic matters related to assigned laboratories including nursing and respiratory therapy, procedures; understand the mechanical function of and perform routine maintenance and repairs on laboratory equipment in assigned laboratory; plan and organize assigned programs and activities; comprehend and apply materials having technical content; select, supervise, and train staff on new equipment; prepare and maintain accurate and complete records; prepare clear and concise narrative and statistical reports; develop and maintain schedules with accuracy; learn, interpret and apply department policies, procedures, rules and regulations; interact effectively and sensitively with staff and students from diverse backgrounds; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Experience and Education Guidelines
Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: Two years of increasingly responsible experience in direct care of medical-surgery patients. (Nursing education
experience may be substituted for some direct patient care experience.)

Education: An Associate of Science degree with major course work in nursing. A Bachelors degree in nursing is desirable.

License or Certificate
Possession of a Registered Nurse license issued by the State of California Board of Registered Nurses; a BLS certificate is required; an ACLS is desired; possess and maintain throughout employment a valid California Drivers License and a good driving record.

Special Requirements
Essential duties require the following physical abilities and work environment:
Ability to work in a laboratory environment with some ability to sit, stand, walk, squat, stoop, reach, and lift 20 lbs.; exposure to mechanical, chemical, blood borne pathogen hazards; some availability to work nights and weekends; meet health immunization and titer standards set by clinical facilities; pass criminal background check and urine dry screening.

PROBATION: New employees will serve in probationary status for the first six months of employment in this position. District promotional employees will serve in probationary status for the first four months.

SALARY : Maximum initial monthly salary placement will be placed on Step 1 ($4,856), Step 2 ($5,096), or Step 3 ($5,343) depending on education and experience. You will receive 5% step increases annually until you reach Step 6.
