Chairperson, Department of Nursing

The Department of Nursing at Appalachian State University invites applications for the Department Chairperson. The Chairperson reports to the Dean of the College of Health Sciences and serves as the academic and administrative leader for the Department. The position is a tenure-track twelve-month position beginning July 1, 2013. The Department of Nursing is housed in the recently formed College of Health Sciences, home to 2500 graduate and undergraduate students. Nursing degree programs include a BSN degree program and a RN to BSN degree program that is offered online.
Candidates must hold a doctorate or equivalent terminal degree in Nursing or a closely related field from an accredited university; have experience in leadership of higher education programs, preferably at the department chair or program director level for accredited nursing programs offering both graduate and undergraduate nursing degrees; demonstrate teaching, service, research and external funding procurement appropriate to the rank of tenured full professor; have a minimum of two years’ experience in direct patient care and two years’ experience in full time teaching in a baccalaureate nursing program; and possess an active North Carolina Registered Nurse license by the date of appointment. Additional preferred qualifications include evidence of a collaborative leadership style that embraces shared governance and builds a culture of trust among faculty, staff, students and administrators across the university; demonstrated success in advancing research and supporting faculty success in securing external funding to support teaching, research and service; successful outreach with a variety of external stakeholders; successful experience in strategic planning and program development.
