Chair, Department of Nursing

The Department of Nursing, one of two departments within the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, invites applicants for the position of Chair of the Nursing Department, to begin September 2013. Applicants must be qualified for a tenured faculty position at the rank of Professor.

Minimum Qualifications: Requirements include an established program of research with external funding, teaching experience in higher education, outstanding team building and collaboration skills, and significant administrative leadership experience or considerable potential for administrative leadership. Applicants must possess an earned research doctorate in nursing or a related field and be eligible for RN licensure in Massachusetts. Preference will be given to applicants with funded research and peer-reviewed data-based publications focused on enhancing the health-related quality of life of diverse urban populations of all ages and targeted to health care quality, health policy, and population health. We are particularly interested in applicants who will strengthen our initiatives in acute care, young and older adult health, community health, medical-surgical nursing, or psychiatric mental health, with research focused on health disparities, health promotion, obesity, physical activity, or rehabilitation, and who are committed to teaching a diverse student population in an urban setting.

The College of Nursing and Health Sciences is engaged in a wide range of multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary collaborative research programs. Current faculty collaborations include those with numerous major academic and medical institutions in and around Boston including the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center, Children’s Hospital, the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and community, public, and private health care agencies. The National Cancer Institute funded University of Massachusetts Boston-Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Care Center grant, "Comprehensive Minority Institution Cancer Center Partnership,” has enabled faculty at both institutions to strengthen and extend partnerships for research, PhD training, and community outreach. New and exciting collaborative teaching and research opportunities are being developed as we add young and older adult components to the College’s interdisciplinary Youth Fitness Training and Research Center.

The BS, MS, and DNP nursing programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The MS and DNP programs focus on preparation of Family Nurse Practitioners, Adult/Gerontological Nurse Practitioners, and Adult Health Clinical Nurse Specialists. The PhD in nursing program focuses on individual and population-related health policy. UMass Boston (www.umb.edu) is ranked as one of the best universities in the northeast by The Princeton Review.
