The University of Iowa College of Nursing seeks a tenured senior faculty member to serve as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. This position is responsible to the Dean and provides creative leadership in the promotion of excellence in undergraduate and graduate nursing education. The role encompasses oversight of and accountability for academic and student affairs, directing faculty with respect to the nature of nursing and the structure of educational programs, and is ultimately accountable for the quality and currency of the nursing curriculum. The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs will provide impetus, direction, and support to faculty as they design and implement educational programs that meet the needs of a changing society and health care system. The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs serves as the Executive Associate Dean for the College, assuming responsibilities of the Dean as delegated.
Position responsibilities include:
Accountable for overall integrity/quality in the delivery of academic programming within the College of Nursing.
Establishes policies and programs that demonstrate a commitment to an inclusive environment that attracts and retains a diverse workforce and nurtures a culture where every employee feels valued and is able to function at his/her best.
Oversees and evaluates academic programs using benchmarking data to measure academic performance against best practices, with support from the Assistant Deans for undergraduate/prelicensure programs and graduate programs.
Ensures appropriate accreditation standards are met and communicates with all relevant bureaus and accreditation agencies.
Monitors national, regional, and local trends in nursing, health care, and nursing education to assure competitiveness in nursing education programs offered at the College.
Leads change in academic programming based on principles of continuous improvement and knowledge of national and state academic standards and mandates.
Responsible for public relations related to academic programs.
Oversees the development, implementation and evaluation of student programming including, recruitment, admissions, advising and student life; the management of schedules, records, and reports within the College; academic advancement; admissions, progressions, graduations; disciplinary actions; and student grievances.
Directs maintenance of student health and program compliance records and collaborates with assistant deans for pre‐licensure programs and graduate programs to assure that student compliance is current.
Administers clinical agency contracts and ensures that a system of record keeping is maintained.
Evaluates the needs of the College for the delivery of quality academic programming, and secures appropriate resources to meet those needs.
Develops and implements programming for faculty and teaching assistants to develop expertise in teaching. Maintains currency of graduate assistant handbook.
Mobilizes resources for advancing excellence in clinical education, in collaboration with the assistant deans and the Director of the Nursing Clinical Education Center.
Provides leadership in collaboration with University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics to create strategic direction to facilitate excellence in the use of simulation for both education and practice.
Creates a climate supportive of the development of programs of research in educational effectiveness and grant supported educational innovation.
Creates a climate supportive of faculty clinical practice and serves as an ex‐officio member on the College of Nursing Faculty Practice Advisory Committee.
Participates in strategic planning for the College’s academic mission as a member of the College leadership team. Facilitates shared governance between college leadership and the College of Nursing Academic Council to assure ongoing improvement and maintenance of high quality academic programs.
Serves as official liaison between the College of Nursing and offices of the University on issues of academic policy and programming: represents the College at University level Associate Deans for Faculty, Associate Deans for Health Sciences Colleges, and Associate Deans for Curriculum, Graduate College, and Center for Credit Programs.
Interfaces with the practice community to create academic partnerships that advance nursing education and practice within the state and the nation.
Serves as official liaison for coordination of educational programming and practice opportunities at the University Hospitals and Clinics.
Represents the College to the broader community, including regulatory and accreditation bodies, on issues related to nursing education; represent the College of Nursing at state, regional, national, international and professional meetings, and legislative activities related to nursing education.
Responsible for the budgets that support the academic programming of the College.
The position is a tenured senior faculty position, preferably Full Professor. Applicants are required to be PhD prepared in nursing or related discipline, with a Masters degree in Nursing from an accredited school. Have demonstrated leadership in undergraduate and graduate teaching, demonstrated scholarship in an area of nursing practice, and experience in academic administration. Demonstrated ability to motivate faculty and lead teams in a dynamic environment is preferred. Applicants are required to have demonstrated commitment to promoting a diverse environment. Applicants must be a licensed Registered Nurse and eligible for licensure in the State of Iowa. Selected candidate must complete the State of Iowa Registered Nurse licensure process upon appointment.
