Job Description
The Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) and the Institute for Health & Aging announce a search for adjunct faculty positions to be filled by July 1, 2013 (preferred, but later start date may be negotiable). Appointments will be at the Assistant Adjunct, Associate Adjunct, or Full Adjunct Professor rank, depending upon the individual's level of experience. We are seeking scientists with an established or promising research career with preferred areas of expertise in these areas: nursing, health policy, science and technology studies, quantitative research methods, qualitative research methods, medical sociology, global health, public health, social policy, environmental health, social determinants of health, political science, political economy, healthcare reform, sociology of aging, social movements and social movement organizations, political economy of aging, critical social theory, public sociology, feminist theory, corporate social responsibility, long term care, community based research, health disparities, anthropology of health and illness, biomedical ethics, social and cultural analysis of science, technology and biomedicine, tobacco control policy, or health economics.   The successful candidates should have the following:
  1. Research programs that will be synergistic with departmental teaching and departmental/institute research directions. 
  2. Candidates should have earned a Doctoral Degree at the start of the     appointment. 
  3. Demonstrated sustained record of extramural funding for research in one or more of the areas listed above.   The primary academic emphasis of these positions is research, but candidates must also possess excellent teaching and mentoring skills, have a record of contributions to university and public service, and have demonstrated evidence of professional competence.
  4. Candidates are expected to cover their salary, fringe benefits, any shared          Department and Institute expenses, and other specific expenses related to             their programs through extramural funding.
 
 
Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences
The faculty of the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) advance knowledge through theory and research; design and evaluate the organization, financing, and delivery of health care; examine the broad dynamics of health, healing, and the production of knowledge and its application in these domains; and provide doctoral education in sociology and nursing/health policy.
 
The Department offers courses of study leading to a Ph.D. in sociology, with major emphasis on the sociology of health, medicine, and health care systems, and also courses of study for nurses leading to an M.S. or Ph.D. with an emphasis in health policy. In the Sociology Ph.D. Program, students participate in a program of coursework, preliminary and qualifying examinations culminating in a dissertation project. In the Ph.D. Nursing Health Policy Program, students participate in a cross-disciplinary program of coursework that prepares them to assess the policy dimensions of issues in the clinical practice, teaching, and research environments within which they work, and to conduct health policy research. In the M.S. Nursing Health Policy Program students participate in a health policy specialty program leading to the Master of Science degree that is open to registered nurses through the School of Nursing.
 
Institute for Health & Aging
The mission of the Institute for Health & Aging is to optimize the health and aging of individuals, communities, and society through research, education, and public service in the social and behavioral sciences. he primary focus of Institute faculty is multidisciplinary, collaborative research that encompasses issues of health, illness, and social and economic policies that affect human health across the life course. The faculty members of the Institute also provide education and training in aging, health policy, and health services research for pre- and post-doctoral scholars in a variety of social science disciplines. Over the past 10 years, IHA faculty have mentored 106 predoctoral students and postdoctoral researchers, and 66 visiting scholars.
 
Responsibilities of Adjunct Faculty Members
  1.  All adjunct faculty are required to engage in research, teaching, university service, and public service. However, they may have their primary focus in one of these areas. IHA faculty, for example, are primarily researchers, and they are involved to a lesser extent in teaching activities and service.
  2. Faculty who are primarily researchers are expected to contribute 60 hours of "service" per year to SBS or IHA. This is broadly defined and can include teaching, lecturing, or serving on school and campus committees.
  3.  Faculty are expected to disseminate research knowledge through peer-reviewed articles, books, and presentations at professional meetings and community venues; and to engage in professional and public service activities at regional, national, and international levels.
  4. Faculty provide service to SBS by teaching and advising doctoral students in sociology and nursing.
