Invaluable experiences!
I’ve recently been accepted into a nurse anesthesia program, I am overjoyed with excitement especially looking back at my journey. I honestly couldn’t have done it without the inspiration of Wallena Gould CRNA, and everyone who I’ve come into contact with due to the diversity nurse anesthesia mentorship program. Since attending the diversity luncheon last March, I have gained invaluable experiences which made me stand out from the pack!!!! There were times when it seemed as though it was an impossible dream. Everyone looks the same on paper but what can you say or do to make “YOU” stand out. With the help of Wallena and her colleagues I was fortunate enough to attend an airway workshop, and gain priceless hands-on experience with the anesthesia machine and airway management skills. We were able to observe spinal anesthesia techniques, review pharmacological management and understand other aspects of the nurse anesthesia career. The information session was also excellent, informational packages were prepared for all attendees containing many aspects of nurse anesthesia, you were giving an opportunity to interact with CRNA’s, SRNA’s and get great advice, as well as other nurses with similar pursuits. All of these experiences help you in your journey, especially by showing whatever program you’re applying to that you have done your research and you will not be wasting their time! It definitely helped me! Wallena is so dedicated in her mission to educate and mentor the minority population about the nurse anesthesia profession. She is always open and available for mentoring, questions, and genuine encouragement. I thank everyone who is involved in the diversity nurse anesthesia mentorship program. Wallena, I thank you personally for your words of encouragement!
