Nursing Instructor (Full-Time, Tenure Track)

Citrus College, Glendora, CA

Position Summary: The Health Sciences Department at Citrus College is currently expanding. The newly approved registered nursing program will maximize the department's ability to offer a complete career ladder in nursing. This educational opportunity will develop the social, technical and professional skills required of a licensed professional nurse. The Health Sciences Department offers programs that include entry-level career certification in several areas, and preparation for State licensure for both the vocational and registered nurse.

The Citrus College Associate Degree Registered Nursing (ADN) Program has received approval from the California Community College Chancellor's Office and initial approval from the Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). In addition, the Citrus College Vocational Nursing Program is accredited by the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT). Successful completion of either program qualifies students for examination for licensure.

This tenure track nursing instructor position will begin in the 2008 Spring semester. It is a 10-month (175 days) assignment, which includes a variety of courses, and will require the selected candidate to teach across programs. The assignments and schedules, as determined by the District, may consist of day, evening, and weekend hours.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain professional and ethical academic standards.

  • Provide class and clinical instruction in accordance with established course outlines and Board Regulations.

  • Inform students concerning course requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance requirements.

  • Maintain necessary attendance, scholastic, and student records and submit them in accordance with published deadlines.

  • Prepare and grade class assignments and examinations according to curriculum standards set by the District and The Board of Registered Nursing.

  • Involve technology in the learning process when appropriate.

  • Teach students with diverse backgrounds.

  • Participate actively in staff development and professional growth programs.

  • Participate in recruitment activities.

  • Meet obligation with regard to grade reporting, scheduled classes, required office hours, and other directions provided by the Director of Health Sciences.

  • Active involvement in all aspects of program design, implementation, and evaluation.

  • Perform other professional duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Minimum Qualifications:

Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students;

Possession of a Master's degree or higher that includes course work in nursing, education or administration AND

A minimum of one year of continuous full-time experience as a registered nurse providing direct patient care AND

Completion of at least one year (two semesters/three quarters) experience teaching pre- or post-licensure courses/clinical rotations related to registered nursing or a course which includes practice in teaching nursing AND

Possession of a valid, active license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing.

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies and stay current with technical developments.

Internet navigation knowledge and skill.

Knowledge of and experience with standard microcomputer software on the Microsoft Windows platform.

Degree must be earned from an accredited institution or an equivalent foreign institution by the screening date. All degrees must be verifiable on a legible transcript by the indicated screening date. Foreign transcripts must be transcribed in English AND evaluated for U.S. equivalency by a bonafide U.S. evaluation service.

Selection Procedure:

A screening panel will review application packages and select a limited number of qualified candidates for an interview.

Each candidate will be asked to make a presentation on a topic of the panel's choice. The candidate will be informed of the topic when an interview appointment is scheduled.

Each candidate will be asked to provide a sample of his or her writing ability just prior to the interview.

Travel costs must be borne by the applicant.

Final candidates will be interviewed by the Superintendent/President.

If selected as a finalist, the candidate permits the District to contact the current and former employer(s) to investigate past employment history.
