Faculty Positions Announcement #N269

University of California San Francisco, Department of Community Health Systems and Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences School of Nursing, San Francisco, CA

The Department of Community Health Systems (CHS) and the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) in the School of Nursing announce searches for two tenure track faculty positions (one for each department) to be filled by September 2008. Appointments will be at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor rank, depending upon the finalist's level of experience. Commensurate with the community health focus of the Departments, a background in nursing, public health, epidemiology, international health research and/or health services research is preferred. We are seeking candidates with promising and/or demonstrated research career that will be synergistic with departmental teaching, research directions and future plans, and who are academically prepared to teach in SBS (Health Policy Programs) or in one or more of the graduate nursing specialties in CHS (Advanced Community Health & International Nursing, Occupational & Environmental Health Nursing, Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing, Adult Nurse Practitioner Program, and Nursing Administration) and to develop a program in global health policy. Candidates must be willing and able to: contribute to the leadership of one of these specific nursing specialties in the context of global health nursing; teach and advise students in the masters and doctoral programs; collaborate with faculty from across the School of Nursing to develop global health research within the School. Major Areas of Responsibility

1. Teaching and advising masters and doctoral students in nursing.

2. Developing/establishing a program of research in global health nursing that is synergistic with emphases of the specialty and department and/or other organized research units on campus.

3. Disseminating research knowledge and engaging in professional activities at local, regional, national and international levels.

4. Contributing to the leadership and direction of UCSF, the School of Nursing and either the Department of Community Health Systems or the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

Doctoral Program in Community Health Nursing/Global Health:

The principal aim of the doctoral program in nursing with an emphasis on global health is to educate students interested in academic careers in nursing with an emphasis on the study of issues in nursing, population health/illness, international health, nursing workforce and the analysis of global health issues. Coursework in the program is aimed at enabling students to develop their understanding of and capacities to use theory; develop research skills and statistical capacities; develop a global health perspective on the many dimensions of nursing, health disparities, vulnerable populations, international health, nursing workforce; develop a focused, independent research project necessary for completion of the doctoral dissertation; and ultimately contribute to the advancement of the nursing profession and the field of global health nursing.

MS Program in a CHS Specialty Nursing Program:

The Masters Degree programs offered in CHS focus on preparing students to provide leadership in a variety of settings. Graduates learn to identify and critically analyze issues that are specific to nursing as well as develop abilities to assess, diagnose and manage primary care problems for individuals and populations; develop, implement, and evaluate community/public health programs; analyze and evaluate administration policies; prevent and manage illness and injuries; and/or respond to mental health needs across the lifespan. They are prepared to use relevant theory and evidenced-based practices, and leadership and policy skills to develop, implement and evaluate the care and treatment of individuals and populations.

Doctoral Program in Nursing Health Policy:

The principal aim of the doctoral program in nursing with an emphasis on health policy is to educate students interested in academic careers in nursing with an emphasis on the study of issues in nursing, health, illness, medicine, health care, and the analysis of health and public policies. Coursework in the program is aimed at enabling students to develop their understanding of and capacities to use theory; develop research skills and statistical capacities; and develop a policy perspective on the many dimensions of nursing, health, illness, medicine, health care, and public health; develop the focused, independent research project necessary for completion of the doctoral dissertation; and ultimately contribute to the advancement of the nursing profession and the field of health policy. Doctoral students must be admitted to the School of nursing doctoral program and then elect an emphasis on health policy and they must take core courses in the nursing doctoral program along with specialty courses in health policy.

MS Program in Nursing Health Policy:

The Masters Degree program in health policy for nurses focuses on preparing students to provide policy leadership in a variety of settings. Graduates learn to identify and critically analyze laws, regulations and policies at the institutional, local, state and national levels. They prepare to use their in-depth knowledge of the history, structure, theory and process of health policymaking in the United States to plan, implement, and evaluate policies. Additionally, they will understand the economic, ethical, and social implications of policy decisions, and devise and use strategies to effectively advocate for policy change.
