Diversity in Nurse Anesthesia - Nursing Student Perspective

I am a senior year nursing student, graduating in May 2009. I discovered the Diversity in Nurse Anesthesia mentorship program via an Internet search. I reached out to Ms. Wallena Gould by email and informed her about my goals in becoming a Nurse Anesthetist. She exuded support, enthusiasm, and inspiration. These attributes were contagious and inspired me further with pursuing my career goals. Also, I was grateful to have discovered a valuable resource for minorities pursuing nurse anesthesia careers.

Ms. Gould invited me to attend the Airway Workshop in October 2008 and March 2009's luncheon. I attended both events. These events were very informative and armed me with the knowledge I need for becoming a competitive applicant in the near future. It was very inspirational to see many minorities interested in the field of anesthesia at different levels in the application process.

Also, I want to express my excitement in seeing minority CRNAs aspiring to or having obtained their doctoral degrees. I aspire to obtain my doctorate and plan to get involve in research later in my career.

I'm very grateful for Ms. Gould's vision and guidance, and the initiation of this wonderful program. I feel fortunate to have discovered her and Diversity in Nurse Anesthesia as a nursing student.

sincerely,
P. Dunlap
