Diversity in Nurse Anesthesia Information Session Oct 10-Miami

I feel compelled to share my recent experience while attending the Diversity in Nurse Anesthesia Mentorship Program recently held on Oct 10 in Miami Fl. It was an invaluable sharing of information and ideas that will help prepare anyone aspiring to become a CRNA.

The insights and direct interaction with School Program Directors regarding their respective programs and admissions requirements was very helpful. One small example of what I learned was an understanding of the minimum number of cases required to graduate as CRNA by each school. This gives you an indication of your preparedness upon leaving a given school and entering the workforce. Another sharing by each school is the long hours you can expect to spend weekly preparing and tending to your cases eg. 60-70 hrs/wk at one school.... or the structure of a school program with regard to clinicals, didactics, distance learning availability, technological advancements in equipment etc...GRE Admissions requirements.... and finally the need to prepare yourself and inform your family of the demands you will be facing financially, mentally and emotionally, let alone the demands on your time. But the key here they assured us is, "it IS ACHIEVEABLE" and the resulting career can be very rewarding. Are you there in Miami with me yet?

The SRNA and CRNA panels offered a lot of value as well around how to prepare for interviews e.g. being prepared to explain why you want to go into anesthesiology, or CRNA shadowing right before an interview and remembering your toughest cases as an RN and how you handled them.

The Panel participants also shared key roles they had worked in at hospitals to sufficiently prepare them for this work. They cited key things to look for and beware of in accepting job opportunities, ...and finally taking time for your own well-being as you go through this career pursuit.

By now you should have a picture of the incredible value offered by the Diversity in Nurse Anesthesia Information Sessions. I strongly recommend attending future sessions if you ever get the opportunity. You won't regret it, I assure you.
