Discouraging Minorities

I am starting my pre-reqs for Nursing in January 2010. I currently wor in Critical Care as a Tech. I have found that most of the Nurses are ver bitter and try to discourage me from going on the CRNA school, I signed up on the forum Nurse-Nurseanesthesia and everyone there just says it's so hard it's so difficult to get through to get in t's like it's this impossible feat. I was told by a Co-worker I should not let anyone know of my plans and I should stay away from the message boards because they are natorious for trying to hold you back. I was also told by a CRNA it's hard but nothing like going to medical school and to ignore the comments. It seems the only place I can get some honest answers thats not trying to tear me down is on this forum why is that? I was thinking it's because of my color but apprently it's all the Pre-SRNA's they are very cut throat. It's worse than Medical school, I have been told numerous times becoming a CRNA is not nearly as hard by Doctors and Crna's why so much cut throat competition. You would tink you would try and encourage one another.

Response to the discouraged

Do not listen to those that tell you it is too difficult or to those that only tell you of the difficulties you will encounter. Anything that is worth something will have some sacrifice. The real question is are you willing? If you are willing to persue your dream and leave the nonbelievers behind then I encourage you to first of all believe in yourself, second, surround yourself with positive influencing people who will assist you in achieving your dream. I do not believe anyone will tell you that it is easy to get through any CRNA program. I do beleive a great number of people will tell you that you can do it. It is possible. Hard work, help by your "friends," and you will be through a program before you know it.
If you have not met Wallena Gould then you have to attend the Diversity CRNA program either at the University of Maryland or Duke University. Both programs are in 2010 and the information can be found at the DIVERSITYCRNA.org website.
I am 50 years old, I do not have the best grades. I was young when I went to school the first time and only did what I had to do to get through school. That resulted in only a little better than a C average. Believe me, that will not cut it for a CRNA program. I went back to school to become a nurse and also earned my BSN. I had a different understnading because I was older and realized the imporatnace of grades. I earned a 3.89 GPA for my BSN and then I new I still had to prove myself so I took graduate level classes and earned a 4.0 GPA. If I would have listened to all those people telling me that I did not have what it took I would have stopped a long time ago. No, I am not in a program...yet. I attended the DiversityCRNA program in Miami and found out what program directors are looking for and I have begun applying. Mrs. Gould has also been my mentor and has steered me in the right direction. It is amzing to me that someone like Mrs. Gould will take the time to help me as she has. I will repay her by helping others make it in a CRNA program. I have my first interview in January. I do not know if I will get in the program, Lord willing I will, but I can tell you that it has been worth the effort. I have found a group of people in Mrs. Gould, Mr. Bing, Dr. Acosta that are so positive and encourage me to continue forward. Do not listen to the neagtive people. They will always be neagative. Attend the DiversityCRNA program and find new friends that are positive and encourage you to reach new hights. You CAN do it! And when you do...remember that there are others out there that need a little guidance to make it...so you help them! Wallena Gould is making an impact for us minorities. She has been willing to go out there and break down walls around the CRNA programs in the country so that people like you and me can apply and get in. Now lets do it!

Response to Discouraging Minorities

It is very unfortunate that so many people are being non-supportive; however, that's life. I agree that persons in such positions should be more supportive to those coming into the field, but that is just not always the case. When I first graduated from Nursing school I remember there were several nurses working on the floor that were just rude and hateful, similar attitudes to what you are describing, and for no apparent reason. Despite that though, one of the older nurses (of 20+ years) told me something I would never forget--she said to me "Unfortunately in nursing, we often times eat our young instead of nurturing them". How true. We will never know why people act the way they do, but now you have tapped into an area that will mentor you and push you into the right direction. No longer spend your time having conversations with these negative individuals. You network and stay in contact with positive people who are steps ahead of you so that they can help prepare you for your future. If you want it, then go for it and be done. Let this be a lesson to teach you how not to treat students once you become a RN/CRNA.

I believe the major issue is your goals and your drive towards achieving those goals. This goes for anything one wishes to accomplish in life. If you are willing to be a Nurse Anesthetics, the sky is your limit, because nobody can stop you but yourself. Staying focused and surrounding yourself with positive thinkers helps a lot. Unfortunately, you will realize that most of your bitter co-workers must have tried but couldn't get in, due to high competetive nature of the program. The difference between you and them is that you remain determined. I attended the Diversity in Nurse Anesthesia mentorship luncheon in Miami last october, and that was one of the best investment I've ever made in life. Listening to people like Lena Gould, CRNA, MSN and founder of the organization, John Bings, CRNA and other CRNAs and SRNAs gave me the courage I needed to apply to different schools. You know your worth, don't let nobody tell you something different. I will encourage you to attend the next Diversity in Nurse Anesthesia mentorship luncheon session coming up in 2010 at the University of Maryland School of Nursing. Don't ever let nobody discourage you into believing you cannot be a CRNA. Stay focused and network with positive thinkers.

First of all let me congratulate you on pursuing a degree in nursing. Secondly, for me I found sharing the news of my pursuit to become a CRNA was not widely accepted by coworkers and some peers. They all gave their two cents and various reasons about why I should pursue other options. Initially, I too was discouraged but in the back of my mind I realized those people would always be in their current situation and everyone does not have your best interest at heart!!! Also, misery LOVES company!!! So my advice, join the Diversity Enrichment Program for Nurse Anesthesia spear headed by Lena Gould. It was the best decision I ever made and I have met some really great people through this program. My final words, stay faithful and continue to pursue your dreams of becoming a nurse, go to CRNA school, and never look back. Use the negativity as fuel to keep going.

Discouraged Minorities

I am a nursing student who will pursue the anesthesia program. I have learned that there are people out there who will discourage you if you are not grounded. My sister had poor grades while in college and then decided she wanted to go to med. school. She was rejected from every med. school she applied to. One school counselor even told her she was not a good candidate and should pursue another field. This made her strong. The "Naysayers" made her strong. She took graduate level science classes at a major university; got "A's". She reaplied and got into every med school she applied to. To make a long story short, today she is Chief of Surgery at a top five hospital, and she even took off a year of residency and did medical research at Harvard. She is a well respected surgeon. This is the same woman who was rejected by all and even told that medicine is probably not for her. We only need to "decide" that this is what we want and then go for broke, when the roadblocks hit; you circumvent them. I am very encouraged by my sisters tenacity and i use her story whenever i feel discouraged. We can all do this! Hope this gives some encouragement I want to be a nurse anesthetis and i will become one
