Critical Care Experience
Hello. My name is Shawlawn. I have been a registered nurse for a year now;was an LPN for 4. It is comforting to know that I am not the only "novice" nurse having difficulty getting into an ICU position. I spent 6 months on a neurosurgery acute care unit and this last 6 has been in corrections nursing because I had given up on my dream of becoming a CRNA. thats simply because every ICU position I applied for, I was always referred to the "unit they thought I'd be good on". I am very competent in Med/Surg. That used to be the pre-requisite for ICU. Now, most employers are asking for one year in ICU already.
What do I do? My hands are tied. I live in Virginia, Hamptonroads/Tidewater area. Does anybody know how I can possibly get my feet wet? Should I try for ED positions? Does it matter if I go to a small community hospital or not? HELP!!!! I dont want to lose motivation!!!!!!

Tue, 12/08/2009 - 9:16pm — lrobinson123Hello my name is latoya robinson and i was contacting you inquiring if you could give me some advice. I am a recent graduate with my BSN. I am currently working in a long term care facility. I have worked as a registered nurse for 6 months now. I am in the process of trying to get some experience in an ICU. It is extremely frustrating because no one wants to train. I am even searching for medsurg postions, basically any positon that will allow me to get into an hospital so i could eventually transfer to the ICU. I am very determined to become a CRNA. It has been a dream of mine for the longest. I always visit the aana website everyday and look at different events, pictures, programs etc.. I am inspired by this and it gives me hope and something to look forward to. Do you have any suggestions of how I could get into a program that helps future CRNA's like myself transition into CRNA school. Do you know of any schools or programs like that???? Im looking for a program that would maybe allow me to work or do residency in an ICU and mentor you and guide you to become successful in getting into a CRNA school. Or could you give me advice on what other options or a differnt route that i could take and last but not least do you know of any clubs or organizations i could join with members in the same situation. I just feel as though i'm alone at times and no one else understands my situation and if i could have some support and may get a chance to network with others i could have a better chance of succeeding.
Thanks so Much!
