Essentials in a Nurse's Locker: A Learned Experience

Earlier this week, the southeastern United States, particularly Alabama, endured an unimaginable weather nightmare.  Who could envision that ice and snow could bring about such disorder? For instance, roadways were gridlocked causing unforeseen traffic nightmares. All in all, it was a health care worker’s nightmare since nurses and other health care personnel could not leave the medical facility and oncoming staff were at the mercy of the weather and perilous road conditions. Since my unequipped Toyota Corolla could not handle such atypical terrains, my brother, David, drove me to work in his Jeep Wrangler. Thankfully, we arrived unscathed but rattled to the hospital. Soon after, I reached my unit focused and ready for the shift; however, I could not conceive what would rapidly ensue. Some nurses had been trapped for 3 days without any of the listed essentials. So, I have composed a list of essentials needed in every nurse’s locker.

  • Medications
-Several nurses went without essential mediations
  • Shampoo/ Conditioner
  • Toothbrush/ toothpaste
  • Soap
  • Water
  • Non-Perishable Food
    -Our hospital's cafeteria became bombarded
  • Extra Set of Scrubs
  • Undergarments
    • Underwear
    • Socks
  • Towels
-Our linen supplier is stationed in Georgia. The transport vehicle could not make the much needed delivery, linen was rationed for 3 days!

All in all, I have greatly learned from this experience. Currently, my locker and car are stocked with these necessities. Hopefully, this list is helpful to other nurses.

I encourage you to share your nursing experiences. I can’t wait to read your comments.

Nurses need lockers like this to have a safety storage of their valuable things, they deserve this locker. - Dr. Hicham Riba
